Smart Export Guarantee explained
How you get paid for solar power you do not use, and how to compare suppliers.
What it is
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a scheme in Great Britain that pays you for surplus electricity your solar panels send to the grid. It applies to solar PV and some other small generators.
Who pays you
Some electricity suppliers have to offer an export tariff. They are called SEG licensees. Each one sets its own rate, contract length and terms, and the rate must always be above zero. You do not have to use the same supplier for import and export.
How payments work
Payments are based on export meter readings. Your supplier pays you for the units you send out, at the rate in your contract.
How much you might earn
Energy Saving Trust quotes around 12p per unit exported. It also notes that you will normally pay more than twice that to buy a unit from the grid. For that reason, using your own power is usually worth more than exporting it, which is one reason batteries appeal.
How to compare tariffs
- The rate per unit, and whether it is fixed or variable
- Any condition that links the export rate to a particular import tariff or battery
- Contract length and exit terms
- How and when you are paid
